Punjab Kings’ all-rounder Sam Curran bowled a tense final over to drive his side to a thrilling five-run win over Rajasthan Royals. The cricketer was left to defend 16 runs off the last six balls of the match, after Shimron Hetmyer and IPL debutant Dhruv Jurel had shifted the momentum back in Royals' favour with expensive couple of overs.

However, Curran defied the two with deadly yorkers in the death, as Punjab Kings clinched the high-scoring thriller in Guwahati. The win granted them successive set of two points in the ongoing IPL 2023 season, after they had beaten the KKR in their tournament opener.

Curran questions ball change factor in match

After the match, Sam Curran said that he was trying to nail his yorkers in the final over to contain the two rampaging Royals batters in the middle. He claimed that he found it difficult to do so because the ball was slippery. The 24-year-old also questioned why his team was not allowed for a change of ball, even though the Rajasthan Royals did so in the first innings of the match. He said:

“I think when it comes to those situations, you know if you nail your yorker, you'll be okay. Some days it works and some days it won't but luckily it was our day. I was trying to get our ball changed because it was like soap. I don't really understand why they got their ball changed but we can't,”

Curran also praised Punjab Kings young opener Prabhsimran Singh for his attacking innings with the bat at the top alongside skipper Shikhar Dhawan. Singh clubbed a 34-ball 60 while Dhawan anchored the Kings innings to 197 with his calculated 86*.

“He (Prabhsimran Singh) has been amazing. I was with him at Punjab four years ago. He was very young and is still young. The team got off to a great start. Hopefully it's the start of a great campaign for him and the runs keep coming because he's an amazing player,”

The 2022 T20 World Cup-winner also spoke about the team’s mindset and described IPL as the best tournament in the world.

We just have to keep getting better because the batters are getting better, the bowlers are getting better and that's why this tournament is the best in the world.”

Punjab Kings now play their next game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday, 9th of April. It is a great opportunity for Shikhar Dhawan and his boys to take an early lead in the points table by winning three in a row.
