Left-arm orthodox Taijul Islam's five-for has helped hosts Bangladesh assume a pole position in the one-off Test against Ireland at the close of day 01 in Dhaka on Tuesday.

Batting 1st, Ireland got off to a wretched start as the visitors lost both their openers- James McCollum & Murray Commins- within the first 10 overs of the morning session, with pacers, Ebadot Hossain and Shoriful Islam chipping in with one each.

Taijul soon got into his act as he trapped the Irish skipper Andie Balbarnie leg-before-wicket, leaving the visitors reeling at 50/3.

Harry Tector (50 off 92) and Curtis Campher (34 off 73) repaired the sinking ship somewhat with a 74-run stand for the 4th wicket, but once Taijul dismissed the former, another procession ensued.

Islam, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz then proceeded to clean up the middle-order and the tail as Ireland lost their last 7 wickets for 92 runs to get bowled out for 214 in just 77.2 overs.

Taijul finished with figures of 28-10-58-5; his 11th 5-wicket-haul in Test match cricket.

However, Ireland have started really well in their defence of 214, with Mark Adair and Andy McBrine knocking over both Bangladesh openers- Tamim Iqbal (21) & Nazmul Hossain Shanto (0)- at the stroke of stumps to leave the home side reeling at 34/2.

Brief Scores:

Ireland 214/10 (77.2)

Harry Tector 50, Lorcan Tucker 37

Taijul Islam 5/58 (28), Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2/43 (17.2)

Bangladesh 34/2 (10)

Tamim Iqbal 21, Mominul Haque 12* (23)
