Ahead of the much-awaited battle, here at OneCricket we predict LSG’s strongest starting XI, along with five potential impact players.
Openers
KL Rahul and Kyle Mayers
Mayers in action against Capitals (BCCI)
Skipper KL Rahul will likely stick with Kyle Mayers as his opening partner for a while, considering the West Indies import clubbed a match-winning 73 in their first match of the season.
Middle Order
Deepak Hooda
Deepak Hooda came in at number three against Delhi Capitals and provided a run-a-ball support to a rampaging Mayers at the end. The all-rounder was one of LSG’s prime batters of the previous season, piling up 451 runs across 15 matches in the middle-order.
Nicholas Pooran
Explosive wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran listed a 21-ball 36 against Capitals to turbo-charge LSG’s total to 193. While he arrived to the crease in the latter half of the innings, captain Rahul might feel tempted to promote him at the top of the order against CSK.
Krunal Pandya
Krunal Pandya enhanced his reputation as a finisher during his stay at the Mumbai Indians camp. The all-rounder is also effective with the ball, and can provide an additional spin option for his LSG captain.
Marcus Stoinis
Marcus Stoinis’ presence in the LSG unit further strengthens their all-round heavy side. Despite failing to make much impact in their previous win, the cricketer might well be given a longer rope this season, considering his influence was one of the driving factors of LSG’s playoff campaign last year.
Ayush Badoni
Ayush Badoni faced just seven deliveries to make his presence felt against the Capitals. The cricketer charted an all-out assault at the death overs before his dismissal made way for an Impact Player, just before LSG took up field for bowling.
Bowlers
Jaydev Unadkat
While Jaydev Unadkat was expensive in LSG’s IPL 2023 opener, the speedster is known for his sheer pace and controlled death bowling. The cricketer will likely continue his run against CSK, owing to his rich form with the ball in the recently-concluded domestic season for Saurashtra.
Ravi Bishnoi
Ravi Bishnoi snared two victims, and in doing so, curtailed Delhi Capitals’ run-chase response in Lucknow. He was also his team’s most effective spinner last year, having scalped 13 victims.
Avesh Khan
Avesh Khan claimed two wickets, including that of batting legend David Warner in the previous game. Moreover, the speedster only conceded 29 runs off his four-over spell when the asking rate was above 9.50.
Mark Wood
Wood celebrates a wicket against Capitals (BCCI)
Mark Wood created English history against the Capitals by claiming best IPL figures from his country. The speed gun struck five times while giving away just 14 runs off his four overs, and was fittingly adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’.
