Gujarat Titans have begun their title defence in style, claiming a five-wicket win over the Chennai Super Kings in the first match of the 2023 season.

With this win, the Gujarat-based unlocked a unique feat. Titans are only the second team to beat the Super Kings in their first three matches. Rajasthan Royals were the first team to do it way back in 2008.

GT and CSK met twice at IPL 2022, with both games taking place in Maharashtra and Titans emerging victorious in both games. In the first meeting, Gujarat won by three wickets in the last over of the match. While in the second meet, they clinched the game by seven wickets with 5 balls to spare.

Talking about this game, the Chennai Super Kings posted a total of 178/7 in 20 overs, on the back of a scintillating innings from opener Ruturaj Gaikwad, who top-scored in the game with a 50-ball 92. Considering the position they were in, CSK could've easily posted a total in excess of 200, but wickets at regular intervals kept the scoring rate in check.

In response, Shubman Gill's 15th IPL fifty took GT to the doorsteps of victory. Vijay Shankar, Rashid Khan, and Rahul Tewatia provided the finishing touches to help their team win against CSK for the third successive time.

Gujarat completes a hat-trick of wins over Chennai. It is pertinent to note that these two teams won't face each other again in the group league stage this year.
