On Saturday, New Zealand decimated Sri Lanka by a whopping 198-run margin in the first ODI to take a crucial 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Batting first, New Zealand posted a respectable total of 274 runs and restricted Sri Lanka to a paltry 76 to record a thumping victory.

Promising New Zealand seamer Henry Shipley emerged as the wrecker-in-chief with the ball for them, scalping a spectacular fifer. In this process, the youngster eclipsed some legendary cricketers to register the second-best bowling figures by a New Zealand player against Sri Lanka in ODI cricket.

Best bowling figures for NZ vs Sri Lanka in ODIs

  • Sir Richard Hadlee: 5/25
  • Henry Shipley: 5/31
  • Danny Morrison: 5/34
  • Matt Henry: 5/40
  • Daniel Vettori: 4/14

Opening the bowling alongside Matt Henry, Shipley dismantled the Lankan batting lineup through a sensational spell of seam bowling. Under Auckland's seam-friendly conditions, the right-arm pacer asked some really tough questions, to which the visiting batters had no answers.

After cleaning up Pathum Nissanka, the tall seamer removed Kusal Mendis and Charith Asalanka in quick succession. Skipper Dasun Shanaka, who edged it straight to the slips, was Shipley's fourth victim, while Chamika Karunaratne was his fifth wicket, which he scalped in the 19th over.

The Canterbury-born was declared the player of the match for his magical spell. He will next be seen in the second ODI between the two teams this Tuesday.
