Mumbai Indians seamer Issy Wong becomes the first player to take a hat-trick in the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023) history. The 20-year-old took a match winning 4 for 15, helping Mumbai Indians Women to beat UP Warriorz Women in the Eliminator match at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.

Bowling her second spell in the 13th over, Kiran Navgire, who was batting on 43 off 26, was caught by Nat Sciver at midwicket off the second ball of the over and became the first of the three to get out off Wong.

Simran Shaikh became the second scalp as Wong executed a very fine cross seam inswinging yorker which destroyed the leg stump. On a hat-trick, with her compatriot Sophie Ecclestone on stroke, Wong went for the yorker again, missing it by a bare margin outside off and caught the inside edge of Ecclestone’s bat to hit the stumps, leaving the entire DY Patil on a roar.

The whole Mumbai Indians surrounded Wong, who completed her hat-trick, limiting UP Warriorz to seven down with only 84 on the board. UP went on to get all-out for 110 with more than 2 overs remaining and Mumbai Indians made their way to the final.

Wong went on to finish with a figure of 4 for 15 in her four overs. Chasing 183, UP Warriorz lost three of their top four batters, including Alyssa Healy and Tahlia McGrath inside the powerplay. Wong got the wicket of Healy in her very first over and UP went on to lose McGrath to a run-out in her second over in the powerplay.

Before this match, Wong was not even in the top ten of the tournaments’ highest wicket-takers list. Now, she is placed fifth in the list with 12 wickets in nine games, being the only pacer to be in the top five.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Nat Sciver scored unbeaten 72 off 38 and helped MI to post a formidable 182. UP fell 72 runs short as Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI went through to the final and will now face Delhi Capitals for the summit battle on Sunday, March 26th at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
