New Zealand will host Sri Lanka in the First ODI of the three-match series on Saturday, March 25th at the Eden Park in Auckland. New Zealand are coming on the back of a 2-0 in the Test series against Sri Lanka and will be keen to carry the momentum into the limited-overs series.

Team Preview

New Zealand

The Kiwis, led by Tom Latham, will field a completely different ODI side, with regulars like Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Devon Conway and Mitchell Santner missing the three-match series completely as they will be traveling to India for IPL which is scheduled to start from 31st March. Glenn Phillips and Finn Allen will also fly to India after the first ODI to join their respective IPL franchises.

Daryl Mitchell and Ish Sodhi are the only remaining first team players available for the entire three ODIs. In addition, New Zealand has included Canterbury’s Chad Bowes, who is expected to make his debut in this series.

The hosts are playing ODIs for the first time since their 3-0 defeat against India back in January. They are currently placed second in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, with 150 points in 21 games and have already qualified for the forthcoming mega event, in India, later this year.

Sri Lanka

On the other side, Sri Lanka are placed 10th in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, with 77 points in 21 matches. They will be keen to earn maximum points from this three-match ODI series and keep their hopes alive for direct qualification to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

In contrast to New Zealand, Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka will be playing with all of their first team players available. However, their ace pacer Dushmantha Chameera, who was previously supposed to take part in this series, is now not available as he has still not completed his rehabilitation from his ankle surgery.

In the batting front, Angelo Matthews is making a return to the 50-over format for the first time since March 2021. Overall, they have a good mixture of both youth and experience in their batting. Skipper Shanaka will be hoping his side to punch above their waist against a comparatively weaker New Zealand.
