In a significant development, the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League will see several changes in the rules and playing conditions. As reported by ESPN Cricinfo, the IPL has proposed numerous amendments to the existing regulations, to be conveyed to the participating franchises soon.

As per the proposal, the sides will only name their final playing XI after the toss. This comes as a revolutionary decision, allowing the teams to form their combination per the game situation.

Regarding the rule, the IPL said in a note:

"Currently the captains have to exchange the teams before the toss. This has been changed to exchange of teams immediately post the toss, to enable teams to choose the best XI depending on whether they are batting or bowling first. It will also assist the teams to plan for the impact player."

Thus, the IPL becomes the second global T20 league after the SA20, allowing the teams to announce their playing XI after the toss.

Meanwhile, the other changes include penalising the fielding side for slow overrate and unfair movements, as mentioned below.

If the bowling team is found guilty of poor over rate, only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle for each over not being bowled in time.

Unfair movement of the wicketkeeper will result in a dead ball, and five penalty runs for the batting side.

Unfair movement by a fielder will result in a dead ball and five penalty runs.

The IPL 2023 starts on March 31, with Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans taking on each other in the tournament opener.
