Mumbai Indians were dealt a crushing blow in their Women's Premier League 2023 campaign as they succumbed to a staggering nine-wicket defeat at the hands of the Delhi Capitals. This was their second consecutive loss after a string of five back-to-back victories.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the Mumbai-based franchise required only one victory to secure a direct berth in the final. However, their batting line-up floundered against the relentless bowling attack of Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey, resulting in a meagre total of 109/8.

In a stunning display of power-hitting, the Delhi Capitals blazed past their target in just nine overs, courtesy of the sensational batting performances of Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning, and Alice Capsey.

With this emphatic triumph, the Capitals have tied with the Mumbai Indians on 10 points in the WPL 2023 leaderboard but have surpassed them due to their superior net run rate.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Harmanpreet Kaur acknowledged that her team fell short of 45 runs and lamented the failure of her bowlers to execute their plans. She also emphasized the need for introspection and analysis of the team's weaknesses, especially after suffering two consecutive losses following a string of five victories.

"We definitely have to bat well to win, we need to sit and discuss what we've not done well in the last couple of games,” said Harmanpreet.

Furthermore, Harmanpreet admitted that the defeat could serve as a blessing in disguise for her team, as it would prevent them from becoming complacent and overconfident.

“We've got good players, I'm happy this has happened to us, at least we won't be overconfident," concluded the MI skipper.

As the race for the final heats up, the Mumbai Indians will face the Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last league match, while the Delhi Capitals will take on the UP Warriorz. If the Mumbai Indians lose and the Delhi Capitals win, the latter will advance to the final.
