Who Are The Costliest Buys for Mumbai Indians?

We are just 11 days away from the start of the 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023).  Mumbai Indians have been the most successful team in the history of the tournament. They have won five titles and would be looking to repeat the antiques. But it will be a steep climb for them as they finished at the bottom of the table in the last edition.

The 'Blue Brigade' seemed pretty active in the auction ahead of the tournament. Their costliest buy this year was the Aussie all-rounder Cameron Green. The Mumbai Indians spent INR 17.50 Cr for Green, which eventually made him the costliest buy in the franchise's history. 

Talking about the costliest buys of Mumbai Indians, in this article we will take about the top five buys in the history of the franchise. 



5. Tim David (INR 8.25 Cr)

Tim David was bought for INR 8.25 Cr during the IPL 2022 auction. The franchise was planning for a replacement of Kieron Pollard, who has served the franchise for long, and hence they opted for Tim David.

The Aussie hard-hitting all-rounder featured in eight matches for the team and scored 186 runs in them at a strike rate of 216.28. They will be expecting a power-packed season from him after making such a big investment.

4. Krunal Pandya (INR 8.8 Cr)

The all-rounder was bought for INR 8.8 Cr by Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2018 mega-auction as they used the right to match card to keep him as a part of the squad. Krunal Pandya has been an integral part of the team for long. He has played 84 matches for the franchise in IPL and has scored 1143  runs at a strike rate of 138.55. Pandya has also picked up 51 wickets for them and has been a great utility player over the years. 

3. Rohit Sharma (INR 9.2 Cr)

Rohit Sharma was released by his former franchise Deccan Chargers before the 2011 edition of the tournament. He was a youngster with a lot of potential at that stage and was due to attract a lot of attention during the auction.

As expected, Sharma fetched a price of INR 9.2 Cr during the auctions as Mumbai Indians picked up him up. Since then, he has been serving the franchise to the best of his capabilities. He has played 182 matches for MI and has scored 4709 runs in them at a strike rate of 129.51. Sharma has also led the team to five IPL titles and we can thus say it was one of the best investments by the team. 

2. Ishan Kishan (INR 15.25 Cr)

Ishan Kishan was released by Mumbai Indians just ahead of the auction in IPL 2022. As the auction began, they MI auction table remained silent and kept waiting for Ishan Kishan. When Kishan's name was drawn up into the auction, MI went all-out for him and picked him up for INR 15.25 Cr.

But to the disappointment of the franchise, the wicket-keeper batter failed to deliver upto the expectations. In 14 matches, Kishan scored 418 runs at strike rate of 120.11. The team management will hope that he improves his number, especially the strike rate this time around. 

1.Cameron Green (INR 17.50 Cr)

After the departure of Hardik Pandya and the retirement of Kieron Pollard, the team management was in desperate search for a hard-hitting all-rounder. During the auction ahead of IPL 2023, Mumbai Indians went all in for the Aussie all-rounder, Cameron Green.

The reputation of Cameron Green as a utility player prompted Mumbai Indians to spent a huge sum of INR 17.5 Cr for them. He became the highest paid player in the history of the franchise. Having invested so much in him, Mumbai Indians will hope that he delivers to the best of his abilities in IPL 2023.
