Shakib Stars With Bat And Ball as Hosts Take Opening ODI Honours

Bangladesh took home the opening ODI honours after being put into bat by Ireland skipper Andy Balbirnie. The Tamim Iqbal-led side outplayed their guests in all departments in Sylhet to take a 1-0 lead in their three-match challenge, as both teams resume their dress rehearsals ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Shakib top scores with landmark ODI knock

Iqbal’s dry with the bat continues as the Bangladeshi skipper was dismissed for just three in the third over of the match. Thereafter, Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto scored identical 20s, while Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy listed power-packed 90s to catapult Bangladesh to over the 300-run mark.

Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim provided finishing touches to the innings with a rapid 26-ball 44, alongside a 10-ball 17-run cameo by Yasir Ali. Bangladesh eventually registered 338-8, their record ODI total as they bettered their 2019 World Cup match-losing effort against Australia by five runs.

Meanwhile, Hasan’s 93-run knock helped him cross the 7,000-run mark in ODIs. With over 300 wickets to his tally in the format, he became only the third ODI cricketer to achieve a double of 7,000 runs and 300 wickets behind greats Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi.

For Ireland, Graham Hume struck four times in his spell and disrupted Bangladesh’s acceleration on multiple occasions from his end.

Ireland falls way short despite solid opening stand

Irish openers Stephen Doheny and Paul Stirling launched a confident start to their run-chase with a breakneck 60-run partnership. However, Doheny’s dismissal marked a dramatic collapse for the visitors as Ireland’s 60-0 soon became 76-5.

Taskin Ahmed and Nasum Ahmed shared five wickets between them after Shakib disrupted the opening stand by removing Doheny. Ebadot Hossain claimed the final two victims to snare a four-fer as the visitors were eventually bundled out for just 155 in 30.5 overs.

The two sides will now take on each other at the same venue in Sylhet on March 20 for the second match of the ODI series.
