In a remarkable turn of events, veteran batter Kane Williamson has etched his name in history, becoming the first player from New Zealand to breach the 8000-run mark in Test cricket. Williamson, who earlier surpassed Ross Taylor to record the most Test runs for New Zealand, unlocked the aforementioned milestone during the ongoing series decider against Sri Lanka in Wellington.

Most Test Runs for New Zealand

  • Kane Williamson: 8124 runs in 164 innings
  • Ross Taylor: 7683 runs in 196 innings
  • Stephen Fleming: 7172 runs in 189 innings
  • Brendon McCullum: 6453 runs in 176 innings
  • Martin Crowe: 5444 runs in 131 innings

After debuting in 2010, Williamson gradually established himself as a vital cog in the BlackCaps setup across formats. While his potential earned him a place in Martin Crowe's fab four, his incredible ability to perform under pressure eventually listed him among the most impactful performers in all three formats of the game.

Williamson, who showcased nerves of steel to pull off a heist in Christchurch, hammered a glorious 296-ball 215, glittered with 23 fours and two sixes, to power his team to a mammoth first innings total in this game.

Riding on his double ton and Henry Nicholls' 171*, the Kiwis were 525 for three in 117 overs at the time of writing.
