Laura Wolvdaardt, Ashleigh Gardner half centuries with the bat, followed by a dominating performance with the ball helped Gujarat Giants outclass Delhi Capitals by 11 runs in Match 14 of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023). This is Gujarat Giants’ second win of the season, while Delhi suffered their second defeat.

Wolvdaart, Gardner propel Giants to 147

After being asked to bat first Gujarat Giants could manage a respectable 147 for four in 20 overs with the bat. They had a shaky start, losing Dunkley early in the powerplay, but Laura Wolvdaardt along with Harleen Deol managed to bat till the halfway mark without any further damage.

Jess Jonassen got rid of Harleen, marking the arrival of Ashleigh Gardner, who changed the momentum of the game completely. She was at her aggressive best and a quick 81 runs with Wolvdaardt for the third wicket.

Wolvdaardt, who had a slow start at the other end, started to open her hands as well and went on to score her first half century of the WPL. Gardner continued the onslaught till the end, completing her half century in 32 balls, helping Gujarat to post a respectable total on a tricky surface.

Chasing 148, Delhi Capitals lost Shafali Verma early but Meg Lanning alongside Alice Capsey assured the runs kept coming and the Capitals were having a decent first six overs, until Gujarat got rid of both Lanning and Capsey in the last over of the powerplay.

Gujarat went on to remove Jemimah Rodriguez just after the powerplay, limiting Capitals to four down with only 52 on the board. It was the Delhj’s last game match winning duo, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen, who had to look after the rebuilding of the chase.

Kapp kept hitting boundaries in regular intervals, while Jonassen was holding one end and Capitals were coming back in the chase. Harleen removed Jonassen to get the breakthrough and soon Kapp was sent back by a tremendous direct hit from the debutant Ashwani Kumari.

The game seemed to be over by the wicket of Kapp but Arundhati Reddy had other plans. The 25-year-old kept the Capitals alive in the game. The game was on once again but Arundhati lost her wicket, giving an easy catch to cover and Delhi went on to get all out for 136.
