Ashwin praises Smith's Exceptional Leadership in Challenging Circumstances

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has lauded the remarkable leadership skills exhibited by the stand-in Australian captain, Steve Smith, in the final two matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Despite the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, Smith was able to guide his team to a comeback after being outplayed in the first two games. Ashwin, who emerged as the top wicket-taker in the tournament with 25 scalps, was effusive in his praise for the Australian skipper's innovative and nuanced approach to the game.

According to Ashwin, Smith demonstrated outstanding leadership skills while leading the Australian team during challenging circumstances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Indian veteran further acknowledged Smith's exceptional creativity and understanding of the game.

“Steven Smith led the Australians in an outstanding manner under such circumstances", Ashwin said as quoted by News 18.

Although Smith is renowned for his impressive batting abilities, the off-spinner emphasized the importance of having a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of cricket to become an excellent student of the game, which Smith undoubtedly possesses.

“We are aware of the fact that he is a great batsman, but to be a great student of the game, you need to know all the nuances. He gets the game. He knows when to do what and he gets the hang of the game,” added the legendary spinner.

The World No. 1 Test bowler also praised the Aussie talisman’s's excellent decision-making skills and his ability to effectively implement various field placements and bowling changes, which proved instrumental in Australia's comeback win in the Indore Test. The 36-year old reckoned that Smith never let India take control in the Indore Test.

“He never let us take control in the Indore Test,” concluded the bowler.
