Temba Bavuma's South Africa (SA) will take on an unpredictable West Indies, under a new leadership of Shai Hope, in the first ODI of the three-match series, starting on Thursday (March 16) at the Buffalo Park, Eastern Cape.

Team Preview: South Africa

The South Africans, earlier in the year, were fantastic against the World Champions England, beating the visitors 2-1 at home. However, for this series, they have named too many of names, which would give captain Bavuma a headache as he will have a problem of plenty.

More or less, the Proteas have a settled eleven; however, Keshav Maharaj's freak injury could haunt them in the upcoming series and in preparation for the World Cup.

Although, this series isn't a part of the CWC Super League, a series win at home could provide a boost to their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations.

Team Preview: West Indies

The Windies, on the other hand, after a debacle in T20 World Cup 2022, have appointed a new captain. They might have a whole new squad under the leadership of Shai Hope, but they wouldn't be a settled unit as the team hasn't played any ODI in the last six months.

West Indies' batting looks frail; however, their bowling unit and all-rounders' prowess make them a tough contender for the Proteas to face.

Players such as skipper Hope, Jason Holder, Nicholas Pooran, Alzarri Joseph and Akeal Hosien will act as their critical pillars in this ODI World Cup year.

After getting thrashed in the red-ball format, West Indies will be looking to change fortunes in the limited-overs set-up and an upper hand in the series will provide massive confidence for the team moving ahead.

Date and Time: March 16, 04.30 PM IST
Venue: Buffalo Park, Eastern Cape

Pitch Report: The surface at the Buffalo Park traditionally favours the batters and seamers, with minimal assistance for the spinners on it. However, as teams bowling first have won matches majorly at the venue; thus, the toss-winner will likely opt to bowl first.
