After suffering back injury during the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against the same opposition.
The right hander was sent for scans during the Test and results weren't as encouraging which means that he would be out of action for some weeks.
Further, the team management will be looking to replace the KKR captain for the three matches that will precede the IPL. Moreover, with Cricket World Cup not far away, there would surely be an eye on the potential backup if there's any need around or during the mega-event that is bound happen in October.
Therefore, here is the list of three players who are likely to be selected for the primed number four slot in Iyer's absence.
Suryakumar Yadav (Source: Twitter)
No.1 T20I batter in the world cricket right now, Suryakumar Yadav has come a long way from where he was two years back. The big hitter has been tried in the ODI format before but the returns are not what he or anyone would have liked.
Yadav is already a part of India's squad for Australia series and looks more certain to be placed for the spot during the series. With Virat Kohli at 3 and KL Rahul at 5, the middle-order would look more settled and it won't be a problem for him to adjust with plenty of experience under the belt.
Sanju Samson (Source: Twitter)
One of the most talked about cricketers in recent times whose name has been discussed and even given chances albeit few is Sanju Samson. The Kerala-born is considered one of the unluckiest cricketers of this age with snubs being a regular part of his career.
So, much so, that he was dropped after a few series even when he didn't featured in many games. Samson is admired for his fluent strokeplay, something he has demonstrated while featuring for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
However, he isn't in the squad and would require the BCCI technical committee to draft him into the setup.

Coming out as a gritty talent, Rajat Patidar might seem to have an outside chance to make it to the India squad. Patidar was influential during his stint with the Royal Challengers Bangalore and India A where he played some tough knocks.
The 29-year-old is known to be an astute player of spin and could come in handy when ball does a thing or two. Furthermore, if gets the opportunity, the Men in Blue could get a solid backup option and infact, a prospect for the future.
