Shreyas Iyer may not be able to take part in the forthcoming ODI series against Australia. The middle-order batter, who was not able to bat in India's first innings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera on Sunday due to back pain, may be ruled out of the limited-overs leg of the series.

The three-match ODI series begins on March 17 with the first game in Mumbai. Iyer has been suffering from recurring back pain for a few months now, and whether he will be fit in time for IPL 2023 depends on the results of his scan.

The BCCI said in a statement that the medical team is monitoring the batter.

"Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day's play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him," the BCCI statement on Sunday morning read.

As per reports, the results of the scans aren’t positive and the batter will now have to undergo further tests.

Iyer’s absence was not missed much in Ahmedabad, where Virat Kohli and Axar Patel shared a 162-run stand for the seventh wicket. India ended day three with comfortable lead of 91 runs.

The middle order batter has been bogged down with injuries in the past as well. He missed the entire IPL 2021 due to injury, which also cost him his Delhi Capitals captaincy.

This season of the IPL, he is set to captain KKR, who spent a whopping Rs 12.25 crore at the mega auction to acquire his services. He has also missed a couple of bilateral series in the past due to injuries.
