In a remarkable turn of events, veteran Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara has breached the 2000-run mark against Australia in Test cricket. The gritty right-hander unlocked the milestone during India's ongoing fourth Test against Australia, joining Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in this process.

Most Test runs for India against Australia

  • Sachin Tendulkar: 3630 Runs in 74 Innings
  • VVS Laxman: 2434 Runs in 54 Innings
  • Rahul Dravid: 2143 Runs in 60 Innings
  • Cheteshwar Pujara: 2019* Runs in 43 Innings
  • Virat Kohli: 1793 Runs in 41 Innings

The fact that Pujara has more runs than Virat Kohli at an average second-best to Tendulkar's in the above list suggests his dominance over Australia over the years. Regarded as the wall of India in modern-day cricket, the Saurashtra-born has often emerged as Australia's nemesis in the purest format.

While his prolific run handed India their first-ever Test series win Down Under on the 2018-19 tour, the batter enjoyed godly status after he survived multiple blows to become one of the finest scriptwriters of India's famous win in Brisbane in 2021.

Regarding the game, India have replied strongly to Australia's first innings total, capitalising on Shubman Gill's flamboyant half-century and useful contributions from Pujara and Rohit Sharma.

In response to Australia's first innings score of 480, India were 141 for one, with Pujara and Gill batting on 28* and 71*, respectively, at the time of writing.
