Australian all-rounder Cameron Green bludgeoned India’s spin attack across the first two days of the Ahmedabad Test. The cricketer struck an imposing 114 and formed a 208-run innings defining stand with senior batter Usman Khawaja.
Green’s 114 marked his maiden Test century, all while countering the likes of India’s ace spin trio, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. He also negotiated a fiery Mohammad Shami, who unfurled thunderbolts at will upon the time of Green’s arrival to the crease.
Green’s ton invites ultimate praise from Ashwin
Ravi Ashwin snared six Australian wickets and was instrumental in reducing them to 480, after they looked well-settled for an even bigger score at 378-4 at one stage. The cricketer toiled away for 47.2 overs, and even accounted for Green’s dismissal after he reached his first Test ton.
However, the Australian all-rounder had already taken Ashwin and co. to cleaners by then. He swept, slogged, pulled and cut on his way to a remarkable innings in Ahmedabad, one which earned him much praise from the senior Indian spinner.
After the close of play on Day 2, Ashwin described Green as “once-in-a-generation” cricketer and justified his $3 million price tag for the upcoming IPL 2023 season. The legendary Indian spinner said:
“I hope you tuned into the IPL auction; it just tells you how the Indian cricketing fraternity rates Cameron Green,
“These are once-in-a-generation cricketers you are talking about. We come from different countries – India is very different, we can’t protect such players for a long period of time. It’s perform or perish. But in countries like Australia and England, they’re doing pretty well at that. I expect Cameron Green to be a wonderful cricketer down the line.”
In the meantime, India finished Day 2 unscathed at 36. Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will both resume India’s innings on Day 3, as they trail the visitors by another 444 runs.
