Chris Woakes has been an integral part of England's Test and white-ball sides. Despite missing red-ball cricket in the past year, Woakes won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Down Under and is keen to play in the upcoming The Ashes 2023.

Woakes, who has opted out of the lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), will feature for Warwickshire in the County Championship in hopes of making it into the Test side, which has been on an unstoppable run, winning 10 out of their last 12 Tests. As per Yorkshire Post, the bowling all-rounder said that he needs to have overs under his belt to perform at the international level, and acknowledged that getting a place in the XI will be a difficult task.

Here's what Woakes said

“If I can get myself ‘red-ball’ fit and firing and bowling well, I’d like to think I’d be in the mix. I haven’t played Test cricket for a year, so I feel like I would need some overs under my belt to have the chance to knock on the door for selection

But it’s a tough side to get into and there are guys bowling extremely well. I recognise that and have an opportunity at the start of the season to put in some performances. What a place to start an Ashes series. It’s a biased opinion. I’d love to be part of it, but I know how difficult it is.”

Woakes last played a Test for the Three Lions against West Indies in Antigua last year. Overall, the 35-year-old has played 45 Tests, claiming 130 wickets and scoring 1,675 runs since 2013.

The former RCB player is currently in Bangladesh, and is in action in first T20I that commenced today.
