Cricket South Africa's director of cricket Enoch Nkwe has revealed that the newly appointed head coach of South Africa's white-ball teams Rob Walter is in talks with Faf du Plessis for the latter's possible return to international cricket.

Du Plessis retired from Test cricket in 2021 but remains available to play white-ball cricket for the Proteas. Despite confirming his availability in front of the media on numerous occasions, CSA has kept ignoring him as he's no longer part of a centrally contracted players list. One of South Africa's most experienced T20 cricketers, du Plessis was overlooked for both the 2021 and 2022 editions of the T20 World Cup by the CSA selectors.

He continued to enhance his reputation as a T20 stalwart by excelling in T20 leagues around the world. Notably, du Plessis’ last ODI came against Australia at the 2019 World Cup in England while he played his last T20I against England in late 2020.

The latest report coming from South Africa suggests that Du Plessis met with Walter recently and they had a brief discussion about the possible return of the veteran cricketer.

"We've always been open to talks with our freelance players and having spoken to coach Rob, he's very interested in resuming those conversations and seeing how best we can work together moving forward. We're happy to engage and see what the best way is forward."

On Monday, CSA announced white-ball squads for the upcoming West Indies series. Aiden Markram has been appointed as the new T20I captain but there are no signs of du Plessis.

This indicates that the discussions are still going on with regard to a return to the white-ball ranks.
