Delhi Capitals beat Royal Challengers Bangalore by 60 runs to start their campaign in the inaugural edition of the WPL on a strong foot. Batting first, the Meg Lanning-led side posted a big total of 223 for 2 on the back of Shafali Verma’s 43-ball 72 and Lanning’s 45-ball 84. That was always going to be a defendable total, but RCB didn’t get a chance to come anywhere close to the total as Tara Norris -- the only associate player in the competition – picked up 5 for 29 to restrict RCB for 163 for 8.

Norris dismissed Ellyse Perry, Disha Kasat, Richa Ghosh, Heather Knight and Kanika Ahuja to claim the first-ever five-wicket haul of the tournament.

"Delighted. Meg and Shafali started well with the bat and the bowlers executed their plans. It is amazing to be here and delighted with the win. The first wicket is pretty special and will definitely take that," Norris said at the post-match conference.

Norris is a left-handed seamer from the USA, who has represented the national team in five T20Is. The 24-year-old first grabbed headlines with her performances in England's Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy in 2020, where she was the second highest wicket-taker for the Southern Vipers with 12 wickets. She has also played in the Kia Super League.

"I grew up in Spain and the US, so I’d never heard of cricket. It wasn’t until chance to shine came into my primary school at about eight or nine years old. They came in for some P.E. lessons which I really enjoyed. They suggested I join the after-school club which I did, and in the end they pushed me through to my local club where there was a girls’ team and it just went on from there," she told Wisden.

Norris studied at the Loughborough University, and played cricket regularly as part of an MCC programme. She has played in The Hundred too, taking part in six games in the 2021 season.
