Delhi Capitals Announce Captain For Upcoming Edition Of League

In major developments, Delhi Capitals have named their captain for the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL). World cricket's most successful skipper Meg Lanning will be leading the Delhi-based side, while Indian star batter Jemimah Rodrigues will be her deputy.

During the recently concluded T20 World Cup, Lanning went past Ricky Ponting's record for captaining a team to the most number of ICC trophies. As captain, the Australian women's skipper has five World Cup titles in her kitty.


With this announcement, all the five franchises have named their respective captains for the much-awaited season of the WPL, starting from Saturday (March 4). 

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur and her deputy Smriti Mandhana are the only Indian skippers in the league. UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants will be led by Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner, respectively.

While commenting on her appointement as Capitals' captain, Lanning said:

"It's a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It's about enjoying yourself, getting the best out of yourself." 

"WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it's the logical next step and makes a lot of sense. Cricket in India is people's lives and the fact that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It's only going to grow in the coming years."


Apart from Lanning and Rodrigues, DC have a solid core with players such as Shafali Verma, Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen. 

The Australian megastar has an impeccable record in the T20I record with 3405 runs at an average of 36.61 and a strike rate of 116.37, with two centuries and 15 fifties in the format.

Her numbers in domestic T20s are equally brilliant as she has notched over 2500 runs off 75 innings, with a ton and 25 half-centuries to her name.

Apart from Lanning and Rodrigues, DC have a solid core with players such as Shafali Verma, Shikha Pandey, Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen. 

The Capitals will begin their WPL campaign with the fixture against Smriti Mandhana’s Bangalore on Sunday at the Brabourne Stadium.
