As many as fourteen wickets fell on Day 1 of the third Test between India and Australia in Indore, which now faces the wrath of former players, fans, and critics. The track was expected to spin; however, the degree of turn on offer surprised everyone.
Former Australian player Mark Waugh has come down hard on the Indore track, saying it was not up to Test standards.
However, it might be noted that Indore's selection as a venue only came up after Dharamsala pulled out weeks before the start of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.
India won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1, where Matthew Kuhnemann claimed his maiden Test fifer to rattle the host batters. Nathan Lyon and Todd Murphy also chipped in with crucial wickets, which saw India being all out for 109.
Speaking to Fox Sports, Waugh also lauded the Australian batters, who showed application and control in their first innings.
Here's what Waugh stated
"It was mayhem. The pitch was not up to test standard, I think that's a fair thing to say. Balls going through the top (layer) in the first 20 minutes of a test match, that's not good enough. They’ve played very straight, they’ve hardly played a sweep shot. Good, smart batting; they’ve probably learnt some lessons from those first two Test matches."
Led by Usman Khawaja's 60, Australia finds themselves with a 47-run lead, with Peter Handscomb (7*) and Cameron Green (6*) batting in the middle on stumps on the first day.
