In a remarkable turn of events, veteran spinner Nathan Lyon has overtaken the legendary Shane Warne to record the highest Test wickets for Australia in the subcontinent.

Lyon eclipsed Warne's tally of 127 wickets by dismissing Ravindra Jadeja in the first session of the ongoing third Test against India in Indore.

Most wickets for Australia in Asia

  • Nathan Lyon: 128 Wickets in 27 Matches
  • Shane Warne: 127 Wickets in 25 Matches
  • Glenn McGrath: 72 Wickets in 19 Matches
  • Richie Benaud: 71 Wickets in 12 Matches
  • Jason Gillespie: 54 Wickets in 14 Matches

While Warne is arguably the greatest-ever spinner, Lyon is hailed as one of the finest tweakers of this generation. Statistically, Warne enjoyed bowling more in Sri Lanka and UAE, while Lyon has primarily succeeded on Indian soil.

Although the 35-year-old had an underwhelming start to the India series, he made a commendable comeback in the second game in Delhi, scalping seven wickets, including a spectacular fifer, across two innings.

Continuing his purple patch, the wily spinner bamboozled the Indian batters on Indore's rank-turner, helping Australia run through the hosts' rampant batting lineup.

As a result of his magnificent bowling effort, India are reeling at 66 for five in 17 overs as of writing.
