After taking Australia to victory in the T20 World Cup final by putting on an unbeaten 74, opening batter Beth Mooney has been appointed as the skipper of the Gujarat Giants side for the inaugural season of the Women's Premier League (WPL) to be played from 4th March in Mumbai.

Head coached by Rachael Haynes and supported by Mithali Raj, the Adani Sportsline-owned side have further selected Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana as the vice-captain.

Mooney has been outstanding with the bat especially in the just concluded T20 World Cup where she piled up 206 runs at an average of 51.5 and with her experience, the side would be quite confident.

On her selection as the leader, the left-hander expressed gratitude and mentioned that she is delighted to have some of the stalwarts of the game working alongside her.

"I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Adani Gujarat Giants in the historic Women's Premier League's inaugural edition in 2023,"

"The squad is keen to get the ball rolling soon and put out an entertaining and effective brand of cricket in the debut season of the WPL. It will be fantastic to have the likes of Sneh as my deputy and Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes and Nooshin Al Khadeer as pivotal parts of the team."

With over 2,300 runs in the shortest format, Victoria-born has been absolutely magnificent, however, this will be her first try at leading a team.

But the 29-year-old would be knowing how it feels to lift the silverware with three World Cup titles and a Commonwealth Bank medal too, infact her three Women's Big Bash League trophies add as a sweetener to her well-organised repertoire.

Mooney will be seen leading the side in the opener against Mumbai Indians slated to happen in DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai.
