Former New Zealand Test captain Kane Williamson reasserted his dominance in the longest format of the game with a record-breaking century on Day 4 of the second Test against England.

After struggling for runs in recent matches, Williamson played a gritty knock to steer New Zealand from a precarious position to a situation of strength in the series decider against the formidable English Test team.

In a remarkable feat, Williamson became the leading run-scorer for his country in Tests during the ongoing match, surpassing the previous record held by Ross Taylor

Needing just three runs to break the record, Williamson started Day 4 on 25 and hit a boundary to secure his place in history.

After the former Kiwi captain achieved the fear, Taylor took to Twitter and congratulated Williamson, lauding his hard work and dedication to red-ball cricket.

The New Zealand veteran spent more than six hours at the crease in the second innings to score a sensational 132 off 282 balls with 12 fours.

He was ably supported by Daryl Mitchell (54) and Tom Blundell (90) as the Kiwis posted a target of 258 to complete a stunning fightback after being asked to follow on.

In response, the England openers started their innings cautiously but picked up the pace as they got their eye in.

They resorted to their 'Bazball' approach and started scoring runs quickly. The highest successful chase at the Basin Reserve is the 277 made by Pakistan in 2003, but the English side would surely back themselves to continue rewriting records, having overhauled four targets of a greater magnitude in 2022 alone.

Williamson's impressive performance is a testament to his hard work and dedication to red-ball cricket, and it serves as a reminder of his status as one of the finest batsmen of his generation.

His ability to turn the tide of a match and lead his team to victory is a rare talent, and it will undoubtedly inspire his teammates as they look to clinch the series against England.
