Multan Sultans sustained a major dent in their table-topping PSL 2023 campaign by losing out to Karachi Kings in match number 14. 

Mohammad Rizwan and co. failed to chase down Kings’ 167-run total, despite relishing a blazing powerplay start at the top in their run-chase.

Tayyab Tahir rises to the occasion on PSL debut

Karachi Kings’ imported openers Matthew Wade and James Vince provided a short-yet-booming start, one which lasted a little over three overs. While the Australian-based wicketkeeper played the role of a run-a-ball anchor, the Englishman clubbed 27 off just the 12 deliveries he faced within the powerplay.


The latter’s dismissal paved way for PSL debutant Tayyab Tahir to form forces with Wade, and the duo commanded the Kings’ innings until the next 14 overs. Tahir announced himself to the tournament with a calculated 65, having struck eight boundaries and a six from the 46 deliveries he faced in the innings.

Wade’s 46, Tahir’s 65 and captain Imad Wasim’s thundering cameo at the end engineered Karachi Kings to post 167-3 off their 20 overs.

Multan Sultans’ in-form openers Mohammad Rizwan and Shan Masood scored sparkling 20s at the top in their rapid 41-run stand. However, Masood’s dismissal at the end of the fifth over triggered an irrecoverable collapse for the Sultans, as his side lost all 10 wickets in the space of the next 60 runs.

Apart from the openers, none of their batter managed to make a notable contribution in their run-chase as they succumbed to the Karachi Kings’ seasoned spin attack.

While Kings skipper Wasim himself accounted for two wickets off his four overs, his senior teammates and T20 veterans Shoaib Malik and Tabraiz Shamsi struck thrice each in their allotted spells. The Sultans were eventually flattened out for just 101 inside 17 overs, thus falling short of their target by 66 runs.
