Australia batter Travis Head divulged the bits of his chat with the Australian coaching staff and selectors after they surprisingly rebuffed the idea of including him in the playing XI of first Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023 Test.

Albeit Head did not expect the snub, he thinks that the experience stood him in a good stead as the door to the XI eventually opened for him in the Delhi Test.

As the southpaw provided the details of his batting mantra, his counter-attacking 43-run knock at Delhi not only made up a comfortable stay at the crease but also branded him as the front-runner for the upcoming Test matches in India.

David Warner's concussion had Australia picking up Head as their opener in the second innings. While after the latter's dismissal the visitors were bedevilled, his innings ensured Australia had a good enough chance of winning the game at one stage.

Here's what Head said:

"The conversations were robust, I guess, and everyone has different opinions. But I respect the coaching staff and selectors. I have a really strong relationship with them so think that's what made the conversations the way they went because there's respect both ways and we are able to voice our opinions.

"It's something I didn't expect coming here, but sometimes that happens and thought I was able to go through that week and prepare myself for another chance… Now it's making the most of that.

"I was pleased with the way I was going forward and back, watching length, and a few things I've worked on. It was a small sample piece but over here small sample pieces can be a little bit of gold to hopefully push forward for the next two Tests."

Australia and India will next collide at Indore in the third Test of the ongoing four-match series, starting on March 1.
