Former Australian cricketer, Jason Gillespie, has advocated for the absence of Pat Cummins from the remaining fixtures of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, citing family commitments.

As per recent reports, the Australian skipper will miss the third Test and relinquish captaincy to Steve Smith for the upcoming Indore Test. Although the speedster may return for the final showdown in Ahmedabad, Smith is expected to lead the team in the remaining matches.

While speaking to Summer Grandstand, as quoted by ABC Online, Gillespie opined that Cummins must be granted the liberty to remain in his homeland with his family, given that the series outcome is already predetermined.

The former cricketer asserted that the tour may mark the Aussie captain’s last appearance in the series, thereby making it sensible for him to withdraw from it. Furthermore, Gillespie rationalized that prioritizing familial relationships over cricketing engagements should be Cummins' primary objective.

The ex-cricketer eloquently expressed that if he were in charge, he would advise the player to remain at home. According to him, since victory is not achievable for the team in the remaining fixtures of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, it would be a good opportunity for Cummins to spend valuable time with his family, given the other significant events slated for the year.

Furthermore, the 47-year-old believes that since Cummins is already missing the third Test, he should consider skipping the rest of the fixtures as well, as his presence may not be indispensable. Gillespie concluded that the 29-year-old quick should prioritize his familial responsibilities as a dutiful son and brother, given that family should be the top priority.

The third Test is set to get underway on March 1 in Indore. The hosts will look to clinch the series by winning the game, thus securing their berth in the World Test Championship final. On the other hand, the visitors will look to put in an improved performance and live up to their reputation.
