Ben Stokes-led England thumped the New Zealanders by 267 runs at Mount Maunganui to go 1-0 up in the two-match series. Harry Brook was adjudged as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his rapid knocks of 89 and 54 against a four-pronged New Zealand pace attack.

Notably, the Englishmen adopted their usual aggressive approach, the one they first put to use against the same opponents last year when Stokes was appointed as their full-time skipper. The tactic has brought England much success in the format, after the extensive agony they suffered during the backend of Joe Root’s tenure.

Ben Stokes claims new height within first year of Test captaincy

Ben Stokes launched his full-time appointment as Test skipper with an emphatic 3-0 win over New Zealand at home back in June last year. Thereafter, the cricketer led his team to a one-off win against India, another home series win against South Africa and capped the year 2022 with a 3-0 triumph in Pakistan.

The all-round maverick has now anchored his side to another huge win, albeit in New Zealand to take early lead in the series. The latest win marks the 10th of Stokes captaincy career, and he has achieved the feat in just 12 Tests.

He has not only joined a league of all-time English legends, but is currently sitting on top of the pile of England’s greatest captains. The dynamic cricketer has become the fastest English skipper to race to 10 Test wins, overcoming the record set by former player Mike Brearley by some landslide.

Here is a look at the fastest England captains to race to 10 Test wins:

  • Ben Stokes: 10 wins off 12 Tests
  • Mike Brearley: 10 wins off 15 Tests
  • Michael Vaughan: 10 wins off 16 Tests
  • Peter May: 10 wins off 20 Tests
  • Joe Root: 10 wins off 21 Tests
  • Len Hutton: 10 wins off 22 Tests
  • Andrew Strauss/Nasser Hussain: 10 wins off 23 Tests
