Amidst the negative reception hurled towards the Nagpur pitch, particularly from the Australian segment, one former cricketer has spoken up in defence of the surface. Cricketer-turned-coach Shaun Tait recently stated that the pitch used in the first Test was actually a “pretty good wicket”.

The ex-Australian speedster even added that it was not a rank turner as many have been claiming it to be over the past few days.

Tait praises Indian batters after huge Australian defeat

Team India, marshalled by captain Rohit Sharma and fuelled by his scintillating ton, steamrolled the Australians by an innings and 132 runs in the first Test. The hosts are now up 1-0 in the four-match series, which also marks the final set of matches for both sides prior to their potential clash at the World Test Championship final later this year.

India’s big win granted them a massive boost on the championship points table; however, it also garnered much criticism and “pitch doctoring” allegations from the Australian media. Even in the lead-up to the Nagpur Test, several media outlets claimed that the BCCI were using their influence to churn up a rank turner to favour home spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin.

While speaking on ESPNCricinfo, he said that the Nagpur pitch on offer was very good and it was India’s batting that made the difference between the two sides.

“It looked like a pretty good wicket to be honest. Not a rank-turner like you said. We did not get to see the whole potential of the pitch because the game got over in three days. But it was good to watch.”

“Australia have got a few good spinners as well. The way India batted was what stood out the most in this game, let alone the spin bowling. Obviously, Rohit and the guys at the end who put up a good partnership was the difference for me. I think it was a good wicket.”

The second Test match between India and Australia will begin from February 17 in Delhi. India already have a lead in the series, and will look to strengthen their grip on the series.
