The Indian cricket team put on a commanding performance in the opening fixture of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, overpowering the visiting Australian squad with an innings and 132-run triumph in Nagpur on Saturday. The Indian bowlers made quick work of the Australian batting line-up on the third day of the match, securing a victory in the early hours of the match's third day.

In the post-match press conference, Indian captain Rohit Sharma expressed that while his team was prepared to endure prolonged spells of bowling, they had anticipated a greater challenge from the Australian side led by Pat Cummins.

“We were prepared to have a hard day’s bowling, spending time on the field session after session. We never thought they would get bowled out in a session. The pitch was slowing down and there was a lack of bounce which surprised me,” said that Indian skipper.

Speaking about the victory and the upcoming Test in Delhi, Sharma stated that they do not dwell on the past, and they live in the moment. However, he acknowledged that the Australians take immense pride in representing their nation and possess the ability to bounce back, thus ruling out any complacency on their part.

India has taken a substantial step towards securing its place in the much-anticipated ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 Final. The hosts’ victory in the first Test against has brought them closer to securing a spot in the WTC Final and they need just two more wins in the ongoing series against Australia to guarantee themselves a spot in the ultimate showdown.

The two sides will now be travelling to Delhi for the second Test which will get underway on Friday, February 17.
