In a remarkable turn of events, the Women's T20 World Cup began with a bang, with Sri Lanka handing South Africa a narrow three-run defeat in the tournament opener in Cape Town.

Besides setting the tone for an enthralling World Cup, the game also demoralised the Proteas Women, who looked distraught after failing to chase a paltry 130.

However, skipper Sune Luus seemed unaffected by the loss, as she motivated her troops by highlighting the highs they achieved in the game, especially their bowling in the powerplay.

In the post-match presentation, she also requested the home crowd to turn up for the remaining fixtures, terming their failure to capitalise on the early bowling success as a significant reason behind the defeat.

"First of all, thank you for the crowd coming. I hope you keep coming again and enjoy the women's cricket. Sri Lanka had a big partnership in the middle and that is a region where we lacked at. I thought 130 was a pretty decent total to chase. One game doesn't define us of course. Lots of positives from today's game for us. We bowled really well in the powerplay and yeah, lots of positives going forward."

After losing the first game by a bare three-run margin, the hosts will give their all to bounce back when they meet New Zealand in their next group-stage fixture on Monday.
