India for ages have been lucky to produce world-class batters, who have scaled the art of batsmanship to new heights across every decade. Former India captain and opener Sunil Gavaskar has lauded India's current batting unit ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023.

India's top order comprises the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Cheteshwar Pujara, who have carried forward the legacy set by their predecessors. New talents like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill have shown glimpses of their class as well.

As per Hindustan Times, Gavaskar displayed full confidence in the Test batting line-up, which lately has been under fire due to lack of runs.

“Our top batters are probably the envy of the cricketing world. I have full confidence in them. Apart from Cheteshwar Pujara, others may not venture down the pitch, but that doesn’t make their footwork suspect.”

Gavaskar spoke highly about Pujara, who in the past year has carried India's Test batting on his shoulder. 

"What a yeoman servant of the game Cheteshwar has been. Brought up the old fashioned but highly effective way of putting a massive value on his wicket, he is the batter that makes it easy for the others. I hope he caps his 100th Test match with a huge hundred."

The 1983 World Cup-winning player also stated that injuries to key fast bowlers in the Australian squad could 'tilt scales' in India's favour.

The VCA Stadium in Nagpur will play host to India and Australia for the first Test beginning on Thursday.
