Would’ve gotten 200 if not for ABD: Chris Gayle recalls his epic 175*

Chris Gayle unleashed thunder like no other when he pounded the Pune Warriors with 175* runs in an IPL T20 game of 2013. The batting barbarian dispatched 17 sixes and 13 blazing boundaries during his 66-ball stay at the crease, which powered the Virat Kohli-led RCB side to a 130-run win.

Notably, at one stage of the match, Gayle looked like he was all set to scale the 200-run mark. He even raced to his ton off just 30 deliveries, with more than 11 overs still left in the innings.

The former West Indies captain recently interacted with ex-RCB player Robin Uthappa at the JioCinema platform. During their conversation, the West Indies opener recalled memories of his epic 175-run hurricane he unleashed in Bengaluru nearly Indian summers ago.

Gayle jokingly said that he could have breached T20’s first-ever 200 that day, had it not been for his then teammate AB de Villiers. The cricketer stated that the RCB dugout kept asking him to give strike to the South African during the death overs, who himself clubbed a seven-ball 31 in the innings before being dismissed off his eighth delivery.

“AB de Villiers came in and scored like 30 runs in 8 balls or something like that. If the guys aren’t like ‘Chris, give him the strike’, I could have gotten 215.' He then went on to proclaim that he set the standards, and jokingly said he should always have been given the strike.”
