It's the elephant in the room: Sophie Devine on upcoming WPL auction

With the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League lined-up in March, the upcoming auctions have stolen the limelight from the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023, due to start on Friday.

Ahead of the marquee tournament, New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine revealed that the WPL auction is the "elephant in the room" and the anticipation for the five-team competition is at an all-time high. 

The WPL 2023 auction is likely to take place in Mumbai on February 13.

As per India Today, Devine, speaking during the captain's conference, admitted the auction could distract players, while maintaining that WPL will propel women's cricket further. 

Here's what Devine said

"It's the elephant in the room, a really unique experience. and enormous. You talk about glass ceilings and I think the WPL is going to be the next stage. Really excited about it.

As female cricketers, this is something we have never been through before. On every scale, it's going to be awkward. That's what we have spoken about."

Australian skipper Meg Lanning also echoed similar views about the WPL. 

The White Ferns will take on defending champions Australia on February 11 in their opening Group A encounter.
