In a remarkable turn of events, West Indies batters Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul have attained a unique batting feat.

Notably, the duo has stitched the highest opening stand for West Indies in the purest format during the ongoing Test match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Opening the batting for the visitors, Brathwaite and Chanderpaul formed a mammoth 336-run stand for the first wicket and registered an all-time partnership record, surpassing the 298-run stand between legendary Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes.

Highest opening stands for West Indies in Tests

  • Kraigg Brathwaite and Tagenarine Chanderpaul: 336 vs Zimbabwe, 2023
  • Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes: 298 vs England, 1990

  • Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith: 276 vs New Zealand, 1999

Regarding the game, West Indies took a brave decision to bat first under tricky conditions. However, Brathwaite and Chanderpaul negated the new ball threat brilliantly and started playing their strokes after getting their eyes in.

While skipper Brathwaite hammered a gorgeous 312-ball 182 before being dismissed by Wellington Masakadza, Chanderpaul completed his first-ever Test century with the utmost  flamboyance.

As of writing, the visitors are 340 for one, with Chanderpaul and Kyle Mayers batting on 150* and 6*, respectively.
