To the delight of cricket fans across the globe, two giant powerhouses, India and Australia will lock horns in a four-match Test series starting this week.

India have been formidable at home, especially in the red-ball format. The hosts have an extraordinary win to loss ratio of 34, vividly representing their dominance on home soil. Furthermore, Australia have managed only one victory in India since 2008.

However, ahead of the series opener in Nagpur, former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene has made a bold prediction.

Despite being aware of India's invincibility at home, the Lankan great hopes Australia to outclass the hosts to clinch the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

"I think it will be a great series. I think Indian conditions and how Australian batsmen tackle that; they have an excellent bowling unit and how do the Indian batters tackle that. It depends on how each team starts the series and who gets that momentum. But it will be exciting. It's difficult to predict, but being a Sri Lankan, I’m hoping that Australia can go all the way. Probably a 2-1 win for Australia, but it's going to be a tough one."

Notably, Sri Lanka need Australia to win, so that they will finish second in the World Test Championship standings and play the final of the WTC 2021-23. So, it's not surprising to see Jayawardene backing the visitors to emerge victorious in this series.
