It was an enthralling opening day of the quarter-final stage in Ranji Trophy as we got to see some brilliant individual performances and team efforts. Let's take a quick view on the action transpired.

M Venkatesh’s five-wicket haul on debut

Karnataka had a brilliant opening day of the quarter-final as they managed to bowl out Uttarakhand to just 116 after asking them to bat first. In reply, Mayank Agarwal’s men finished the day with 123 runs on the board and seven runs lead with all ten wickets in hand.

Karnataka’s M Venkatesh was the star of the day as the seamer from Mysore finished with five for 36 on his first-class debut, becoming the eleventh Karnataka player to do so. With the bat, Mayank Agarwal remained unbeaten on 65 at stumps, well supported by R Samarth with an unbeaten 54.

Bhui-Shinde stand puts Madhya Pradesh on backfoot

After electing to bowl first, Madhya Pradesh had a good start, picking two wickets within the first hour with Andhra further losing Hanuma Vihari to an injury. However, Ricky Bhui and Karan Shinde led the visitors to lunch without any further damage and went on to bat the entire day.

Andhra finished with 262 for 2 at stumps, thanks to an unbeaten 190-run stand between Bhui and Shinde. Bhui completed his fourteenth first-class century, second of the season and Shinde will continue on 83 on Day 2.

Ruthless Bengal pacers skittles Jharkhand for 173

Bengal and Jharkhand are up against each other for the second consecutive season in a quarter-final. It is once again Bengal who had a better opening as the home side managed to bowl Jharkhand out for 173 after electing to bowl first.

Bengal’s pace trio comprising Akash Deep (4/62), Mukesh Kumar (3/61) and Ishan Porel (1/26) ran through Jharkhand’s batting order, claiming seven wickets between them. With the bat, Jharkhand’s number three, Kumar Suraj scored a gritty 89 not out. Bengal could come to bat as the day got called off due to bad light.

Parth Bhut rescues Saurashtra against Punjab

After electing to bat first, Saurashtra found themselves under huge trouble as they were limited to eight down with only 147 on the board. Parth Bhut, batting at nine, scored a terrific knock of 111, taking Saurashtra’s total past 300. Bhut’s 111 is the highest score at number nine or below in a Ranji Trophy quarter-final match.

Bhut added 61 runs with Chetan Sakaria for the ninth wicket and further went on to score a 95-run stand for the last wicket with Yuvrajsinh Dpdiya. Punjab will be disappointed to let things slip and will be keen to have a long batting day on Day 2.
