Australian Will Pucovski's career thus far has been nothing less than a tragedy. Concussions, injuries and constant mental breaks have prime reasons for the touted prodigy to not flourish in top-flight cricket. But, to his relief, Pucovski is all set to make his return to cricket this weekend.

The 24-year-old has been named in Melbourne XI for the two-day fixture in a Victorian Premier Cricket match against Essendon.

Nick Creely, a sports journalist with The Standard, reported about the right-hander's return using his Twitter handle.

Making his First-Class debut in 2017 and Test debut in 2021, the opening batter has shattered numerous records. He's among Don Bradman, Ian Chappell, Ricky Ponting and four other Australian greats to score a double hundred in the Sheffield Shield before turning 21.

Once touted as Australian cricket's torch-bearer, Pucovski could never showcase profound flair as he has time and again taken breaks from cricket. In 2018, he requested Cricket Australia not to consider him for selection, citing reasons “due to matters pertaining to mental wellbeing”, following his first Shield double-century.

A year later in November, he made himself unavailable for Test selection after playing for Australia A.

Debuting against India in 2021, Pucovski made a pleasing 62 but dislocated his shoulder in that Test match, which derailed from cricket for six months. After returning in 2022, he got hit on his hit and suffered concussion in a game against South Australia.

In total, the opening batter has suffered 11 concussion scares thus far in his career.

The Victorian could also make his Sheffield Shield return, when the side faces Queensland on February 9 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
