With the abundance of leagues, players are finding it difficult to stay focused on playing international cricket, with the ever-increasing physical and mental workload. Former South African great AB de Villiers, too, believes that it is becoming harder for players to stay inspired to play all three formats in the current scenario.

The 38-year-old made 420 international appearances for the Proteas — 114 Tests, 228 ODIs, and 78 T20Is — with much acclaim, apart from playing in the Indian Premier League, Big Bash League, and Pakistan Super League as well.

Speaking to PTI, De Villiers said that the only way forward is for boards and players to stay in constant communication and address such issues first-hand.

Here's what ABD said

"That's a tough question. Because I don't want to be the guy to just say give up a format or two. And once again, it's a global cricketing issue at the moment to keep the players inspired to play all formats of the game for their countries.

"But I do think there's room with the various boards around the world to pinpoint players, to have community discussions and communication early on in players’ careers, to understand what they want to achieve, first of all, and secondly, where they fit in with regards to the cricket in their own country to represent the country internationally,"

De Villiers, however, did not discredit leagues, stating that it has helped players like Surya Kumar YadavDewald Brevis and himself elevate their game to the next level.
