Former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie was one of the heroes of his side’s triumphant tour to India back in 2004. The speedster was the highest wicket-taker of the series, one which marked as Australia’s only win in India since the summer of 1969.

The cricketer-turned-coach believes that the current crop of Australian players can also script a similar history over the next couple of months, provided they keep their “egos” in check.

Gillespie cautions Australia ahead of India Tests

The 47-year-old recently praised Australia’s Test side, helmed by fast bowling maverick Pat Cummins. The former player believes that the current team can replicate 2004 success if they have the adaptability and situation awareness throughout the series.

“Back in 2004 we, as a bowling group, put our egos away. So whichever way the Australian team goes, I think adaptability and situation awareness is going to be absolutely crucial,”

While Gillespie expressed his confidence owing to Australia’s Test series win last year in similar conditions of Pakistan, he warned Cummins and co. to not fall into a false sense of security.

He stated that even though the conditions are similar, the Indian players use their conditions differently than their Pakistani counterparts.

“I love what Australia did in Pakistan (last year); their goal was to win on day 15 of the Test series and I thought the way they went about it was fantastic, and there’s no reason why they can’t do it in India,

“It’s subcontinental conditions, but they are different, and Pakistan players use the conditions slightly different to India players,”

The former pacer also added that the upcoming series provides a great opportunity for young Australian players like Alex Carey and Travis Head. He claimed that if the two batters carry their fine tunes with the bat to India, they can be a part of history.

We’ve got Alex and Travis hoping they can be part of history. I think we have an opportunity to do just that and I think Carey is going to be a central figure in that and I think Travis will play a huge role as well.”
