In a remarkable turn of events, Australian legend Steve Smith has recorded his fastest fifty in T20s. Smith, who represents Sydney Sixers in the BBL, achieved this phenomenal feat in the Sixers' final group-stage clash against Hobart Hurricanes at the iconic Bellerive Oval in Hobart.

Opening the batting, Smith hammered 66 runs at a blistering strike rate of 200, before being trapped plumb in front of the stumps by Nathan Ellis.

He completed his fifty in only 22 balls, thereby setting the record for the joint second-fastest fifty for the Sixers alongside Nic Maddinson.

Fastest fifty for Sydney Sixers in BBL

  • Dan Christian - 15-ball fifty vs Adelaide Strikers, 2020
  • Nic Maddinson - 22-ball fifty vs Sydney Thunder, 2016
  • Nic Maddinson - 22-ball fifty vs Melbourne Stars, 2018
  • Steve Smith - 22-ball fifty vs Hobart Hurricanes, 2023

Overall, Chris Gayle holds the record for the fastest fifty (in 12 balls) in the BBL history. The dynamic West Indies opener achieved the milestone against Adelaide Strikers in 2016.

Smith missed the initial half of the tournament due to Australia's home Test series against South Africa.

However, the 33-year-old showcased his versatility immediately after joining the Sixers' camp. He came to this game on the back of two scintillating consecutive tons and looked relentless until he got out.

Smith's fantastic knock powered the Sixers to 180 in 20 overs. As of writing, the Hurricanes are 7 for no loss in one over.
