With the growing popularity of the shorter formats of the game, the traditional ODI format is fading out with time. More entertainment and a less time-consuming T20 format has attracted more audience in the recent past as the watching pattern has seen a paradigm shift.

Something similar was echoed by former Indian batter and IPL superstar Robin Uthappa who was unsure of the 50-over format surviving in the long run. Uthappa's take on the matter is that people in the modern generation are unwilling to devote seven hours in a day to matches as the schedules are getting tighter.

He further claimed that TRP is playing a major role in deciding what will get more attention from the boards, fans and players. He adds that newer nations could also be getting an opportunity to present themselves in future.

“I think the game is evolving in that direction. But it’s also the viewership that dictates, what’s going to be more popular and what’s going to evolve, and what’s going to devolve.

“And I see the game evolving in that direction and 50 over cricket, I don’t think we live in a world today where people can invest seven hours of their day into coming and watching a 50 or a one-day game at the stadium or investing that much time and watching a one-day game you know or at home, on the telly, today you do get apps as well."

Uthappa is currently a part of the Dubai Capitals side in the ILT20 happening in the UAE.
