The retirement of Hashim Amla has left his fans and teammates deeply emotional. The legendary South African batter retired from all forms of the game on Wednesday, and since then social media has flooded with heart-rending tributes.

Earlier in the day, one of Amla's dearest friends and former captain AB de Villiers penned an emotional note, calling him a 'brother' who made him feel safe in so many ways.

Another Proteas great and the legendary batter's mate, Dale Steyn has given a tribute to Amla and congratulated him on an illustrious career.

While using his social media handle, Steyn wrote:

"He probably won’t see this tweet but I just wana to tell you all, @amlahash is more than a cricketer, he is genuinely one of the best humans ever," the former seamer cited. "The mighty #we salute you! Well done my friend."

Amla, 39, debuted for South Africa in 2004 and retired from the international sport after the 2019 World Cup. After that, he played a couple of county seasons with Surrey and won the 2022 edition with them.

Over the years, the Durban-born played various significant knocks for the South African team, having amassed 18,672 runs across all three formats. Meanwhile, he has left the game with over 34,000 domestic runs.
