It was a match for the ages for India's opening superstar Shubman Gill who thumped a marvellous double-ton in the first ODI against New Zealand. His heroics helped the Men in Blue to overcome the Kiwi challenge by 12 runs in a tight-contest even after posting 349 on the board.

After the game, Gill was asked about his heroics and what was his thinking while batting. The right-hander replied that he was waiting for this opportunity whereas his main focus was to put on a good partnership for his side so that they could reach a decent total.

"Yes, I mean was waiting eagerly to go out there and do what I do. Definitely got some momentum and got the sixes. Happy with it. Sometimes when the bowlers are on top, try to put some pressure on them. I wasn't really thinking of 200 but it was more about getting the partnerships and getting the team to a good total,"

Furthermore, he was full of praise for left-hander Ishan Kishan, calling him his best mate as according to him, the previous double-centurion has been quite supportive of him.

"Yes, it's amazing to see him score a double hundred and now he is there for me. He is my best mate. It feels nice to see things going my way. It has sunk in well. Bracewell hit those biggies and the game was topsy-turvy. Great game to be a part of for me."

Gill will be next seen batting for India in the second ODI to be played in Raipur on 17th January.
