Mental health issues, especially in the field of sports has emerged as one of the most important factors as to why athletes take a break from the sport they love.

One such case was Australian cricketer, Glenn Maxwell, who took an indefinite break from cricket in 2020, citing mental health issues.

In the fourth episode of the documentary 'The Test', Maxwell revealed what transpired three years ago and the reason behind his decision to take a break from cricket.

“I tried to fake everything I did. I went through depression and that was on the back of 18 long months trying to do everything right by anyone else. When I put my hand up in 2019 when I was struggling, if I hadn't let it go, a couple of weeks later who knows where I would have been," Maxwell said.

He added: “Every time I had something niggling me or on my mind, I'd get someone into my room - or go and meet someone somewhere and just have a chat. As soon as you get those words out and you're not holding them in, it can be a relief off your shoulders.”

Maxwell had a poor 2020 season, not only for Australia, but in franchise cricket as well. The dynamic all-rounder eventually recovered and once again became a key figure in the Australian setup.
