Umran Malik continued his impressive showing in white-ball cricket, claiming three wickets against Sri Lanka in the first ODI in Guwahati. Malik clocked 156 kmph to become the fastest Indian ODI bowler found high praise from former batter Sanjay Manjrekar.

Manjrekar specifically pointed out Malik's knack for picking wickets, wherein the bowler has gone wicketless just once in his 12 limited-overs appearances for India.

In six ODIs and as many T20Is the fast bowler has 19 international wickets. The cricketer-turned-commentator took to Twitter to laud the 23-year-old's progress.

"Umran Malik is like those bowlers who can’t help but get wickets. Just once in his 11 white ball matches he has gone wicketless."

The Jammu and Kashmir pacer opened about his bowling plans in the first ODI post the first innings, and explained his role in the side.

"I want to bowl in good areas and do well. It was a flat wicket, the bounce was low. I spoke with the bowling coach, skipper and Shami. They told me to bowl wicket to wicket and used the bouncer which worked for me. I want to bowl in good areas and my role is to bowl in the middle overs."

Malik will be in action on Thursday in the second ODI, with India leading the series 1-0, after winning the Guwahati encounter by 67 runs.
