In a remarkable turn of events, young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw has set the record for the highest individual score for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy history.

The batting sensation, who was unbeaten on 240 at stumps on day 1 of Mumbai's ongoing encounter against Assam, went on to smash 379 runs in just 383 balls and achieve the milestone, surpassing Sanjay Manjrekar's long-standing record.

In this process, he also recorded the second-highest individual score in the history of the tournament.

Highest individual scores in Ranji Trophy history

  • BB Nimbalkar - 443* for Maharashtra vs Saurashtra, 1948/49
  • Prithvi Shaw* - 379 for Mumbai vs Assam, 2022/23
  • Sanjay Manjrekar - 377 for Mumbai vs Hyderabad, 1990/91
  • M.V Sridhar - 366 for Hyderabad vs Andhra Pradesh, 1993/94
  • Vijay Merchant - 359* for Mumbai vs Maharashtra, 1943/44

Shaw, who made his first-class debut in the 2016-17 season, made his international Test debut immediately after impressing everyone with his nonchalant stroke play at a tender age. However, he was dropped from the red-ball format as soon as his technical shortcomings was exposed in Australia.

However, the dynamic batter has enjoyed stellar success in the Ranji Trophy this season, garnering 539 runs at a splendid average of 67.37. If he continues to perform like this, he might soon receive a recall into the national setup.
